The Intermediate Ice Climbing course is generally for those who have completed the Intro to Ice Climbing course or the equivalent, or for those who have significant rock climbing experience but have yet to try ice. This course can be one, two, or three days. Extending the course to multiple days will allow you to get more comfortable climbing steeper ice and explore more terrain.

The rates on this Intermediate Ice Climbing offering apply to most local ice climbing options that fit within a normal (8 hour) day. Ice climbing options that are advanced, remote, or take up a long (8+ hour) day may be billed at a higher rate and be capped at a 2:1 climber to guide ratio. Please see the Standard & Extended Rates section further down the page for more info.

This course is available as a private or pre-existing group.

Course Information

In this course we’ll further hone your ice climbing technique:

  • There will be an emphasis on the idea of the self belay using your ice tools. The self belay is simply placing your tools so securely that you can essentially rely on them as a belay for keeping you attached to the ice.
  • You will also learn about rope work, placing & removing ice screws, and anchor building.
  • We’ll teach you how to “read” the ice, to see the weaknesses where tools want to stick and also to learn the places where the ice is weak and prone to break.
  • We’ll also go over the all important subject of how to get down. This includes how to place v-threads and we’ll talk about when it might be necessary to use two v-threads and many other tricks for rapelling safely.
